Work Schedule: Monday – Sunday (Continually work a 12 hour shift on a rotating 7 day cycle)

Position Purpose:The Wastewater Plant Operator is responsible foroperating and maintaining the Wastewater Treatment Plant in accordance with guidelines established by the State of Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) Division of Water Supply and the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).

Core Functions Statement(s)

  • Monitor and control various wastewater treatment plant processes through a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to meet and/or exceed TDEC NPDES guidelines; 
  • Collect samples, perform analytical laboratory tests, and record results as needed;
  • Inspect, service, and repair components of the wastewater treatment plant including head works, pipes, valves, pumps, chemical treatment equipment, laboratory equipment, process control equipment, and building facilities; 
  • Keeps plant superintendent and maintenance aware of operational and maintenance issues;
  • Collect wastewater treatment plant and collection system water samples as directed;
  • Makes certain that backup equipment is in working order to prevent/minimize mechanical breakdown from interrupting the treatment process;
  • Keeps daily log of shift operations and relays pertinent information on to incoming shift; reads logs of previous shifts and records operational data required by state and federal regulations;
  • Collects water and sludge samples at specified points in the treatment process for the lab technician to test;
  • Handle bulk chemicals while following necessary safety precautions; 
  • Runs lab tests on weekends and when lab technician is not available;
  • Perform a variety of custodial and maintenance functions throughout the Wastewater Treatment Plant facility and assists other maintenance crews as directed;

  • Must maintain a valid drivers’ license from state of residence.

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Associate degree within a technical field of study including but not limited to Engineering Technology, Environmental Health, Science, Computer Science, etc.
  • Ability to assist with mechanical and electrical facility maintenance. Working on pumps, motor controls, plumbing, and minor construction projects.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical motors, motor controls, electrical wiring, and Programmable Logic Controllers.
  • Basic knowledge of piping components and plumbing.
  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance.
  • Intermediate computer skills that contains a broad knowledge; knows and applies the full range of concepts, practices of the field.
  • Personal computer skills in the following areas: Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office (especially Excel), and ability to learn specialized software controlling various systems;
  • Must have effective communication skills;
  • Must have analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Must be able to interact with MU customers in a respectful and sensitive manner to resolve customer complaints and service interruptions; 
  • Ability to assist with mechanical and electrical facility maintenance. Working on pumps, motor controls, plumbing, and minor construction projects.
  • Communicate frequently in a professional manner with internal and external persons
  • Competencies include communication, coordinating, vocational, computer, and analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree within a technical field of study including but not limited to Engineering Technology, Environmental Health, Science, Computer Science, etc.
  • General Chemistry college credit hours
  • TDEC Division of Water Supply Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Certification or obtain the certification within four (4) years of employment.

Other requirements:

  • May be required to attend up to but not limited to 20 hours annually of certification training.
  • Seek to stay abreast new technology to ensure best practices for operations.
  • Basic Leadership skills

Nature and Scope

Work Environment (Extent of Interaction with Supervisors for Approval, Concurrence, Resolution, Etc.)

  • The incumbent shall interact with management staff to receive guidance and provide information to perform the job duties specified.
  • The incumbent must interact with Water Department personnel to provide information concerning customer complaints and service outages. Incumbent shall receive information from various Water management staff to resolve these issues.

            Business Environment (Economic or Technological Conditions Dealt with on a Regular Basis)

  • The incumbent will seek to stay abreast of ever changing standards set forth by TDEC and Federal agencies. This will require the incumbent to attend training seminars and research various TDEC regulations and AWWA/ANSI standards.
  • The incumbent will seek to stay abreast of new technology including plant process control equipment, computer hardware and software, and plant process equipment (pumps, motors, valves, etc.). This will require incumbent to attend training seminars and research best practices for operations. 

            Internal and External (Nature and Frequency)

  • The incumbent shall have contact with chemical and equipment representatives along with maintenance staff to perform duties specified.
  • The incumbent shall have daily contact with various MUS customers to resolve customer complaints and service outages. Incumbent is expected to maintain a courteous and respectful communications with each customer while trying to resolve service issues.
  • The incumbent must interact with Power and Telecommunication Departments to provide information concerning customer complaints and service outages.
